The Dove

A many and many a moon ago,
I stared into his eyes,
And asked him what he thought of me-
Much to my surprise,
he said without me he would perish,
never to see my face,
to leave this Earth without a love,
without his saving grace.
I told him just the same I felt,
about him and his love.
then he got down on one knee,
and pulled out a white dove.
He said a ring was not enough,
just a small glued down rock,
so he told me as long as this dove shall live,
our wedding should be in lock.
I said but doves, they live so long,
then die and ne’r return.
He replied, this dove is special,
you’ll see it soon as the sun turns.
Puzzled, I put it in a cage,
to protect it from death, which offers no return.
Nervous that it would escape or die,
leaving me and my heart to break.
Thinking to myself he must have lied,
like the story about the snake.
So many years passed but still this dove lived,
to my shock and slight dismay.
and as I aged I saw that it still looked
and stayed the same.
